The Corps of Port Authorities - Coast Guard, carries out tasks related to the civil uses of the sea and is functionally and organizationally framed within the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, to which its main institutional duties are referred. Furthermore, the Corps operates in a functional dependency regime from the various Dicasteries, including the Ministry of the Environment and the protection of the territory and the sea, and the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, which make use of its organization and his specialist skills. Among the aforementioned competences above all the safeguard of human life at sea, the safety of shipping and maritime transport, as well as the protection of the marine environment, its ecosystems and the surveillance activity of the entire chain of sea fishing, from the protection of resources to that of the final consumer. To these are added inspections on the national merchant, fishing and pleasure boats, also conducted on foreign merchant ships that climb the national ports.
As a specialized Corps of the Navy, the Port Authorities exercise the functions of a military order in the typical forms provided for by law. The current workforce consists of 11,000 men and women, distributed in a capillary structure consisting of 15 Maritime Directions, 55 Port Authorities, 51 Maritime District Offices, 128 Local Maritime Offices and 61 Beach Delegations, through which the Corps continues to exercise its multiple attributions, on the sea and along the coasts of the country.
